Jääkäripuukko 85 (Mini Puukko) – compact Finnish knife for precise work at home and in the outdoors
Jääkäripuukko 85 is a small, exceptionally handy and durable Finnish knife, perfect for home use, bushcraft, hiking, and everyday carry. Thanks to its compact dimensions and precise control, it is ideal for finer and more accurate tasks where cutting precision matters most.
It performs perfectly for carving, preparing kindling, food preparation, opening packages, and small workshop or household tasks. If you do not need a large knife for heavy chopping, this model can easily become your primary outdoor knife. And if you prefer larger knives, it works excellently as a reliable backup blade in your gear.
Made in Kauhava, Finland, a town with a long tradition of producing premium puukko knives.
Small knife, maximum practicality
In the outdoors, a bigger knife is not always the better choice. On the contrary, a smaller puukko with a short blade is often the most practical option for everyday camp, forest, and travel tasks. For heavier duties such as splitting or chopping, an axe or larger Skrama is better suited, while this model excels in detail work and easy carry.
Thanks to its compact size, it fits easily into a backpack, pocket, car, workshop, or toolbox. It also makes an excellent practical knife for your vehicle or emergency kit.
Drop Point blade and durable Full Tang construction
The knife uses the proven Drop Point blade profile, familiar from the larger Jääkäripuukko models. This shape provides excellent cutting control and versatile use both outdoors and at home.
At the base of the edge, there is a practical sharpening choil for easier maintenance, while the spine has been intentionally ground and beveled to make it ideal for striking a firesteel and starting a fire. This is especially valuable in wet and demanding conditions when you need to get a fire going quickly.
The durable full tang construction combined with the injected rubber handle ensures excellent strength and a secure grip even when wet. The end of the handle also features a lanyard hole. Despite its shorter handle compared to larger models, the Jääkäripuukko 85 still feels excellent in hand.
Proven 80CrV2 carbon steel
80CrV2 carbon steel is used in all Varusteleka carbon steel knives and is one of the long-proven materials of Finnish knife craftsmanship. This durable and reliable steel has been trusted in traditional puukko production for decades and has earned an excellent reputation internationally.
Thanks to its toughness, durability, and ease of sharpening, it is ideal for bushcraft, outdoor use, survival, and everyday tasks. Like all quality carbon steels, it does require basic care – after use, it is recommended to dry and lightly oil the blade to maintain its excellent condition and corrosion resistance.
Special heat treatment for maximum durability
The heat treatment process leaves the surface layer of the steel slightly tougher, significantly improving the blade’s resistance to impacts and lateral stress. In practice, the knife performs similarly to more expensive blades with differential hardening, where different sections of the blade have varying hardness levels.
The result is an extremely durable working knife that easily handles demanding field use, fine carving, and tougher wood processing tasks.
Firesteel-optimized spine
Because the steel’s surface layer is slightly tougher, the sides of the blade spine are additionally precision-ground into sharp edges. This exposes the harder steel core, making the spine angle exceptionally hard and perfect for striking sparks from a firesteel and fire starting.
This design ensures reliable spark generation even in difficult wet or cold conditions where a fast fire is essential.
Choose the sheath that suits your needs
The Jääkäripuukko 85 is available in several versions – knife only, with a plastic blade protector, or with a sheath. If you enjoy making your own sheaths, the knife-only option is the perfect choice.
For safe storage without belt carry, the plastic blade protector is an excellent option. For everyday field carry, you can choose a plastic protector with belt loop, Kydex sheath, or classic leather sheath.
