Don't worry if you happen to lose, damage, or burn through the base (Fire Base) of your Kelly Kettle – replacement parts are easily available. This particular base is designed for the larger Base Camp and Scout kettles, which have one large air intake hole in the base. The smaller Trekker model uses a different base with two smaller air intake holes.
The fire base of your Kelly Kettle may burn out or become deformed over time. The good news is that replacement bases are readily available. The base is especially important when using the kettle in dry environments where there is a risk of fire. Correct use of the kettle on the base ensures that the fire and embers remain safely contained at all times.
Stainless steel bases typically last many years of heavy use. The key to prolonging their lifespan is to extinguish the fire immediately after the water in the kettle has boiled. Many users leave embers burning in the base long after the kettle is removed, which can cause the metal to overheat and warp. To maximize the lifespan of your fire base, always extinguish the fire after each use.
Of course, the Kelly Kettle will operate perfectly well without the base. Simply place it on a non-combustible surface – such as a flat rock or gravel – and slightly elevate it using 3–4 small flat stones (about 1.5 cm off the surface). This allows proper draft through the chimney and ensures the water boils efficiently.
